Esters were mainly used in aviation oil manufacture where extreme conditions took the internal combustion engine above and beyond the limits of prior thought. More recently, esters have been at the top of the race, and most recently with Motul, street oils.

The benefit of using esters in engine oil is most evident in their anti-slip properties. Synthetic Motul Double Ester technology allows 0% cutting loss. When it comes to 'cutting' an oil, it means that the movement of high volume oil components in your engine physically breaks down the oil molecules. The result is a loss of viscosity that will damage the wearing components in your engine, based on a thin but even oil film. Modern oils contain additives to aid in cutting stability, but the only way to prevent eventual breakdown is through oil changes.
